Why 16 Hz?

The paper (Woods et al. 2024, Communications Biology) parametrically tested AM rates of 8 Hz, 16 Hz, and 32 Hz at low, medium, and high depth.

Best result: 16 Hz at medium depth (F(1,80) = 4.03, p = 0.048). The benefit grew with self-reported ADHD symptoms (ASRS) — high-ASRS listeners improved most under 16 Hz.

EEG showed stimulus–brain phase-locking at 16 Hz that strengthened over the session only for AM+Music, not control music. Beta-band (14–25 Hz) activity is implicated in attentional control.

120 BPM = 2 Hz beat; 8/16/32 Hz are 16th/32nd/64th-note rates.
